Components Tests

Application Description

The main aim of component testing is to test the various engine parts such as water pump, oil pump, cooling and lubricating circuits as regards their durability. In addition the functionality of system components such as the valve gear or high-pressure injection system can be examined.

Demands on the Test Bed

The following development tasks are carried out on the test rig:
Standard tasks such as:

  • Measuring temperature and pressures
  • Measuring vibration paths and adjustment travel
  • Measuring mechanical stresses
  • Strain measurements

Problem-oriented tasks for troubleshooting

A particular challenge is the integration of the many sensors and various special measuring equipment.

Due to the variety of components that are tested, the test bed must be very flexible in its configuration, allowing easy adaptation.

The AVL Solution

AVL's solution for component testing is a flexible multi-configuration test bed with dynamometer allowing you to carry out a whole range of test tasks flexibly and highly efficiently for optimizing different components and design testing, all on the same test rig. Components can be be tested in combination with the combustion engine - in particular for critical engine components such as the cylinder gasket, oil pump and filter, or coolant systems.

An important part of the solution is media conditioning, where exact control of the temperature, pressure, back-pressure, mass flow, etc. of the oil and coolant is essential.

The automation is based on AVL's automation platform, providing a homogeneous test environment throughout your test facility. At the same time, the functionality of the system is matched to the needs of component testing, for example by providing standard test runs in the test run library.

Mechanical Components

The diversity of component test beds means that the mechanical parts of the test bed are often highly specific and have to be individually engineered. AVL has a highly-skilled and experienced team of engineers to provide this service for customers.

The standard systems AVL offers are

  • Mounting System for component under test
  • AVL Intermediate bearing (when dynamometer is required)
  • AVL Intermediate Frame (when dynamometer is required)
  • AVL Wallbox FEM for data acquisition units

As an option AVL offers ambient air conditioning systems so that the component may be tested under different climatic conditions
Product Description

Dynamometer

A dynamometer is not always required when testing engine-related components on their own. Often an electric motor is enough to provide the necessary impulses for the test.

However when the combustion engine provides the impulses, both an engine (provided by the customer) and a dynamometer are needed.

AVL provides the AVL DynoRoad AFA Series, the smallest being 60kW, together with the EMCON 400 controller for this application, to ensure reproducibility on the basis of excellent dyno control.

Data Acquisition, Automation and Control

AVL PUMA Open allows fully automatic testing for durability testing around the clock. Includes standard test runs in the library and enables the administrator or user to archive his/her own specific test runs.

In-built security systems such as border value monitoring and emergency stop are included. PUMA Open also offers quick and easy data evaluation functionality.

For data acquisition, AVL's FEMs – Front End Modules) are highly flexible for the large number of different measurement parameters needed for the various different components under test.

Actuators and Sensors

Due to the diversity of engine-related component testing, the required actuators are defined according to customer-specific requirements by AVL's engineering team. AVL provides sensors for many physical parameters with the accompanying variety of I/O channels

For frequency analyses, the crank angle is needed. AVL provides the AVL 345 Angle Encoder for this purpose.

Media Conditioning Equipment

If the components being tested involve fuel, oil or coolant these must be conditioned to ensure constant conditions. For this purpose, AVL provides the following systems:

  • AVL 553 Coolant Conditioning System
  • AVL 554 Oil Conditioning System
  • AVL Fuel Temperature Control

Operating Panels and Cabinets

Depending on the available space and the test equipment required, AVL offers a range of easily adaptable modular system cabinets and operating consoles. Where only limited space is available, special compact solutions are available.

  • AVL Test Commander Operating and Control Desk
  • AVL Test System Operating and Control Cabinet
  • AVL Test System Operating and Control Desk
  • AVL Compact Cabinet – wall mounted 19" cabinet
  • AVL Console for the operating panel AVL P400

Other Instruments

  • AVL Indicating Systems, for examination of injection systems
