Engine Emissions Light Duty Testing & Calibration

Application Description

Once the functional, mechanical and combustion development has taken place and the base calibration work is done, a high-end test bed may be used for optimisation of the engine before or in parallel to vehicle tests. Tasks include:

  • Engine Mapping and control unit calibration
  • Simulation of legal emissions tests in preparation for certification
  • First evalution of driveability

The certification of light duty vehicles according to emissions legislation takes place on the chassis dyno test bed. However, much work can be done in advance on the a dynamic engine test bed to ensure that the engine meets the legal requirements.

Demands on the Test Bed

A great number of sensors, instruments and peripheral equipment is needed on this type of test bed, and these have to be seamlessly integrated into the whole system.
The accuracy of the emissions analysis system is crucial.
The test bed must run according to the emissions regulations it is trying to emulate.

An exact replication of conditions on the chassis dyno is necessary, which means driver, vehicle, road load etc. must be accurately simulated.

The AVL Solution

AVL offers a complete test bed solution for testing light duty engines under near-real road conditions, as well as supplying complete emissions analysis systems. The synergy of emissions analysis equipment, emissions-specific automation and result presentation as well as an almost exact simulation of certification conditions enables goal-oriented emissions development at a very early stage, before vehicle prototypes are available

Mechanical Components

AVL offers a wide range of mechanical equipment for test bed operation. Proven standard solutions cover many automotive applications. In addition AVL provides tailor-made systems.

Standard mechanical components for an engine test bed are:

  • AVL Cable Boom and Boom Box FEM or Wallbox FEM
  • AVL Drive Shaft System
  • AVL Engine Mounting System
  • AVL Intermediate Bearing
  • AVL Intermediate Frame
  • AVL Isolated Base Plate
  • AVL Pallet System
  • AVL Shaft Guard

Emissions Analysis Equipment

For emission measurement on the engine test bed that replicates certification conditions the following emissions equipment is required:

  • AVL CEB II Emissions Analysis System with EGR, Pre-Cat, Post-Cat, CO2 Tracer, Diluted
  • AVL CVS 4000 Constant Volume Sampling System
  • AVL Opacimeter (CI engines only)
  • AVL Smoke Meter (Diesel engines)

Dynamometer

In order to simulate the conditions on the chassis dynamometer or on the road, an active dynamometer is needed with extremely low mass inertia. The AVL DynoExact APA Series is ideal for this application and is a recognised industry standard.

Data Acquisition, Automation and Control

The emissions-specific automation for light-duty engine testing is AVL GEM 301L, on the basis of the AVL automation platform PUMA Open. This approach offers the advantages of PUMA functionality regarding test run configuration, easy integration of sub-systems and network capabilities with the emissions-specific features offered by GEM – emissions test runs according to legislative requirements, reporting appropriate for certification.

For dynamometer and engine control required for dynamic engine testing AVL offers the EMCON 400 system, integrated within the automation system PUMA Open.

AVL ISAC 400 is the simulation package allowing the simulation of driver, road profile and conditions. This advanced software tool allows the simulation of the chassis dynamometer, as used in certification testing.

The proven AVL Front End Modules (FEMs) have been developed for data acquisition because they can be positioned in the cell, close to the unit under test, maximising signal quality.
