Over the last years the overall fuel efficiency of gasoline engines substantially was improved. Even so, the end customers expecting even higher fuel economy, but want to maintain with cheap engines and low vehicle prices.
The challenge for meeting the trade-off for low engine production costs and advanced engine technology has to be optimised. By applying the most suitable combustion technology for individual engine/vehicle combination the best overall benefit with respect to cost has to be found.
