Fuel & Lubes

Application Description

This test bed forms the basis of many types of fuels & lubes testing, and can be used for both industry standard and in-house test methods.

The main categories of tests are:

ASTM F+L Industry Tests
JASO 2-T Tests
CEC F+L Industry Tests

Demands on the Test Bed

The bed is designed to enable the rapid fitment of a range of engines and conditioning / measuring systems used for a variety of test methods. It is configured to enable the most frequently used dynamometer control and engine parameter formats to be used. All standard CEC, JASO and in-house test methods can be accommodated subject to the limitations of the dynamometer power range chosen.

The AVL Solution

With the benefit of a quick-change palletised system, this test bed allows a number of engine tests to be carried out in the same cell; increasing utilisation rate and improving return on investment. By retaining the major installation equipment on the pallet with the engine, the problems of installation changes affecting precision and severity of test results are eliminated.

Mechanical Components, Sensors and Actuators

  • Docking station and pallet
  • Exhaust back pressure control

Dynamometer

  • DynoPerform 160
  • DynoPerform 350

Data Acquisition, Automation and Control

Media Conditioning Equipment

If it is required to carry out both in-house and industry standard test methods, the AVL 553 and 554 conditioning systems for coolant and oil and recommended parts of the test cell. In addition, fuel temperature control, if not specified as part of the test procedure, can help to improve test repeatability. Conditioning systems specifically mandated by the industry body will be installed on the pallet, which accompanies the test engine. As exhaust back pressure is often a critical part of the test procedure a suitable control valve is recommended.

Other Instruments

Service

AVL has affiliates in all parts of the globe and can provide a local service for the installation and maintenance of all equipment.

Comprehensive training on all equipment listed in this document is available from AVL. In addition we also provide tailored training covering test operation of all the industry standard test methods, rating, test design and statistical evaluation, and laboratory management practices.
