The electronic management of advanced commercial diesel engines offers a wide potential for combustion refinement using the potential of the latest high pressure FIE. The emphasis is on developing for the lowest possible engine out emission while maintaining attractive fuel economy.
The strategy of AVL emission development is to ensure that no basic change in technologies is required as the emission legislation targets are being reduced: Evolution rather than Revolution. This is to avoid technologies becoming obsolete before they have paid off.
Progress is made by improving the knowledge of the combustion process for a better understanding of how emission components are generated. The emission development is then taking advantage of the continuous improvement in fuel injection technology, electronic control, air management and exhaust gas after treatment.
The emission development for legislation coming into force after 2010 in Europe, Japan and the US is equally challenging requiring similar strategies and technologies, however calibrated to the specific needs of the different transient test cycles.
