Euro 5 Emission ComplianceThe target is, to comply with the next legislation step using minimum exhaust gas after treatment for low product cost and acceptable maintenance requirements. With an optimized combustion using the potential of advanced fuel injection equipment and a model based control strategy for FIE, TC and EGR, the engine out emission will be close to the target already. To cover the production tolerances and ambient boundary conditions, a minimum of after treatment will be sufficient.
Basically two after treatment solutions are available:
- The base engine is equipped with cooled EGR, and timed for NOx compliance. An advanced particulate trap which has no tendency to clog is added to reduce PM emission. This package is the lower cost option, typically used for light commercial vehicles.
- An SCR system is applied for NOx reduction to an engine tuned for complying with the particulate target. The engine cost will be higher as compared to the first option, but the operating cost (including the cost of urea added) is lower, hence SCR is the recommended solution for heavy duty long-haul vehicles
