Combustion DevelopmentCustomer RequirementsThe market is requesting improved fuel efficiency and ever increasing driving performance more and more. These demands have to be reconciled with steadily tightening emission limits.
In order to reach this goal, it is essential to be thoroughly familiar with the entire combustion process and all relevant parameters. As a consequence, all investigations in combustion optimisation work has to carried out in close co-operation with respect to engine design, thermodynamic cycle management, gas- and cooling flow requirements as well as mechanical issues for series production solutions.

AVL ApproachFor its development work, AVL is using sophisticated test methodology and the latest test bed and instrumentation technology. The development on advanced AVL test beds uses prototype hardware already pre-optimised by simulation for a better quality of the results and to shorten the overall development schedule.
Progress is made by improving the knowledge of the combustion process for a better understanding of how emission components are generated. The emission development is then taking advantage of the continuos improvement in fuel injection technology, electronic control, air management and finally exhaust gas aftertreatment. On the basis of detailed knowledge and experience in combustion development methodology, AVL has created practical tools that make complex combustion and injection phenomena tangible and visible. |
