Diagnosis CalibrationCustomer RequirementsOn-board diagnosis application has a massive influence on the brand image, customer satisfaction and commercial success of a vehicle. Failure to comply can lead to product recall or large fines for the OEM, whilst incorrect diagnosis of proper working components can cause large costs for customer service and give risk for possible recalls.
The requirement is a robust diagnostic calibration that fulfils the manufacturer’s specific strategy whilst taking into account all influencing factors such as component tolerances, fuel quality variation, ageing and ambient conditions.
In addition, differences in particular markets’ legal requirements need to be observed. Diagnostics calibration has a significant influence on the timescale of the whole application. Therefore an approach that permits efficient, time-saving execution and a reduced number of test vehicles is necessary.

AVL ApproachAVL’s wide experience in combustion development and exhaust gas after-treatment provides the ideal prerequisites for understanding the correlation between exhaust and diagnostic results. AVL checks the existing diagnostic functionality, adjusts it as necessary, carries out the complete diagnostic calibration and assists with vehicle certification and production start-up (end of line testing). If so required, AVL takes responsibility for OBD check fleets, at the customer’s location or by means of remote diagnosis on endurance testing systems.
Calibration takes place in the vehicle and at laboratory test facilities (HIL), whilst the correlation between diagnostic and emissions results is evaluated on emissions dynamometers.
The application’s robustness with respect to vehicle tolerances, fuel quality and ambient conditions is verified through vehicle tests at AVL and climatic test trips. |
