Design and Production of Single Cylinder Research EnginesCustomer RequirementsSingle Cylinder Engines (SCEs) are commonly used to conduct research programs on advanced technologies at reasonable cost. To be useful, such SCEs have to be flexible to accommodate a wide variety of pistons, liners, cylinder heads and fuel injection equipment. Such engines also have to cope with extremely high cylinder pressures and mean effective pressures.

Engines can be modified to incorporate optical access with AVL’s video recording and laser measuring techniques. There is more space and a greater freedom to install a variety of instrumentation.
- Confidence in Correlation:
Single cylinder results correlate well with those from multi-cylinder engines for in-cylinder studies when the BMEP of the single is reduced to allow for the difference in friction. Valuable fuel consumption and emissions data are reliable too if the turbocharger efficiency is correctly modelled. Lubrication, stress and friction conditions can be accurately reproduced.

AVL can provide all the supporting equipment needed. Engines can be supplied with baseplate, dynamometer, air compressor, coolant and lube oil handling, controls, instrumentation and data logging equipment.

AVL ApproachAVL has a long tradition in developing new and advanced combustion systems by SCE testing. The AVL Single Cylinder Research Engines are of a modular design that can easily be adapted to carry customer specific parts like liner, piston, connecting rod, cylinder head, camshaft(s) and valve train. The crankcase module houses a specifically built crankshaft sized for high cylinder pressures, the mass balancing module provides first and second order balance shaft with adjustable weights.
AVL designs the base unit with adaptations to the specific parts as well as manufactures and assembles the components. Installation of the engine together with the dynamometer on a base frame completes the set up. AVL also provides a turn key package with the SCE and dynamometer together with systems for coolant, fuel, oil etc. and the required instrumentation and controls.
