Friction Optimization

Friction Optimization is of central importance for achieving low fuel consumption. For the analysis and optimization of the friction behaviour of all relevant engine sub-systems AVL is using various methods.

  • On running engines, a high precision cylinder pressure indication method is used to measure the map of friction losses versus speed and load for different oil and coolant temperatures. Also the incluence of different oil formulations can be assessed. Energy management strategies can be assessed by this method regarding their effect on friction and fuel consumption.
  • In order to determine the individual friction contributions of the various engine sub-systems the so called strip down analysis is used. In this case the measurements are done under motored condition, but under controlled coolant and oil temperatures. Experience shows, that these motored friction measurements are also relevant for a fired engine in the lower load range, which is important for fuel consumption test cycles like the NEDC test.
  • For dedicated friction measurements several test rigs are available. For example a piston ring friction tester is available which is based on the floating liner principle.
