In the engine heat transfer analysis component temperatures are simulated either for stationary or transient conditions. Transient temperature fields build the basis for the thermal mechanical fatigue analysis. AVL has developed advanced methodologies for simulating the whole process from identification of the heat input from the combustion chamber or the exhaust manifold by means of gas side CFD analysis to the simulation of nucleate boiling cooling effects.
The component temperatures are detrimental for the simulation of the thermal stresses in the components such as cylinder head or piston. The accurate temperature field analysis in the engine engineering process is a key requirement for minimising development time and risk.
