AVL - TINER (TM)Technology for In-Cylinder Nitrogen Oxides Emission Reduction
Customer RequirementsOver the period 2006 – 2008 US EPA Tier 3 emissions standards are to be introduced for diesel powered, mobile, non-road equipment. These standards are technically challenging and the emission control technologies developed or being developed for on-road applications not particularly suitable for the non-road environment. We have therefore responded by developing „TINER“ – Technology for In-cylinder Nitrogen oxides Emission Reduction. This technology avoids the corrosion problems which take place when using cooled EGR together with high Sulphur content of off-road fuel.

AVL Approach- AVL - TINER (TM) modulates the residual gas quantity in the cylinder and can be tuned to provide a good NOx/PM/BSFC trade-off in combination with low production costs to suit for off-road the application.
Tiner needs:- A new layout of the gas exchange process, resulting in the requirement for a new camshaft and a new turbo charger match
- FIE providing at least 900 bar up to 75 kW, 1100 bar above 75 kW
- Combustion system development
- Durability verification
Tiner does not need:- An external EGR valve, EGR control system or control system development
- An EGR cooler and associated piping
- Any form of exhaust aftertreatment, trap regeneration system or regeneration control system development
Non- Road Applications- A low-cost solution to meet Tier 3 emission standards im the power categories 37 – 75 kW
- For turbocharged and aftercooled engines
- With mechanically controlled FIE up to 75 kW
- With electronically controlled FIE above 75 kW
