About AVLFollowing its foundation in 1948, AVL has grown to become one of the world‘s leading engineering companies specialising in internal combustion engine powertrain design and development, and is also a leading manufacturer of powertrain and vehicle test systems and instrumentation. AVL is privately owned and fully independent.
The Powertrain Division comprises four business units: Passenger Car Powertrain Systems, Commercial Powertrain Systems, Large Engines and Advanced Simulation Technology. The engineering units cover all internal combustion engine types from the smallest moped to the largest marine propulsion engine, fuelled by either conventional petroleum fuels or liquid and gaseous alternative fuels.
The business unit Advanced Simulation Technologies is AVL‘s “software house”, developing advanced simulation and predictive engineering software not only for internal AVL use, but also as stand-alone products for the international market.
While it is best known for its design and combustion development expertise, the Powertrain Division has developed its production engineering and reliability engineering capabilities over the last decade and is now fully able to carry out all the tasks necessary to be able to release a new product for production. Several such projects have already been completed.
The Test Systems and Instrumentation Division of AVL manufactures all the testing equipment and instrumentation required for engine, powertrain and vehicle development plus production end-of-line testing. The carefully devised modular design of the product range offers optimum flexibility, from stand-alone solutions through to fully integrated systems. For turn-key projects, AVL provides a complete range of services from facility planning, project management, equipment specification, customer support and training.
The synergy between the two divisions has been a major factor in AVL‘s success and is exemplified, for instance, by the collaborative development of unique methodologies and software tools to assist the increasingly complex task of calibrating electronically controlled powertrains.
Commercial Powertrain SystemsThe business unit Commercial Powertrain Systems has three main business areas and product groups: Commercial Vehicles (light, medium and heavy duty trucks and busses, heavy SUV), Agricultural Tractors and Industrial & Marine engines.
Building on its long tradition of designing and developing engines for the strictly regulated and competitive commercial vehicle market, AVL also satisfies the needs evolving from the challenges facing non-automotive powertrains as stringent exhaust emission and noise regulations start to take effect.
AVL designs and develops the complete powertrain including heavy duty transmissions, both manual and automated with sophisticated electronic vehicle control to match the requirements of the particular application, on-road or non-road.
The powertrain design and development at AVL is supported and complemented by Plant & Production Engineering. Commercial Powertrain Systems offers a complete engineering service from the concept stage through to production, for all types of applications.
