AVL DGI-tc CONCEPT for Low Fuel ConsumptionMany times the expression “downsizing” (smaller engine capacity) has been published as solution for bringing fuel consumption down. Even more efficient seems to be “downspeeding”, which takes advantage of shifting powertrain operation conditions to higher load at lower engine speed. But, contrary to less successful attempts for downspeeding of automobiles on the market some years ago, when only transmission gear ratio was taken longer, the new approach now is based on applying engine characteristics specially dedicated for that purpose.
It was aimed to demonstrate the potential for reducing fuel consumption by means of downspeeding and showing that even long gear ratios may increase fun-to-drive. Therefore, the naturally aspirated base engine was replaced by Turbocharged Direct Gasoline Injection (DGI-tc) engine of same capacity and 30% higher power. For definition of the powertrain layout, special attention was paid to optimise and utilise the beneficial low-end torque characteristics of this DGI-tc engine developed by AVL.
The given concept offers superior drive-away acceleration and convincing performance, but with significantly reduced fuel consumption and similar CO2-emissions than HSDI-Diesel engine in same vehicle.
Key Features of the Concept:- “Downspeeding” instead of Downsizing
- Turbocharging, maintaining engine displacement
- CO2 Emission in NEDC similar to HSDI
- Significant potential for further improvement even with standard components
Customer Benefits:- Fuel economy improved by >10% combined with >30 % higher power
- Superior elasticity due to over-proportional torque
- Excellent fun to drive
