Powertrain Engineering USA Technical Centre Michigan

USA Technical Centre Michigan

AVL Powertrain Engineering, Inc. (AVL PEI) offers comprehensive automotive engineering services which emphasize three client-oriented goals:

  • Quick turn-around
  • Consistent quality, reliability and repeatability in procedures and results
  • Maximum cost efficiency

AVL PEI procedures and new facilities are constantly optimized to achieve these goals and to ensure they keep pace with advances in automotive technologies. This allows us to perform repeatable, reliable, highly cost-effective and strictly confidential design and development testing of automotive engines, powertrains, and their components that consistently meet the budget, schedule and timing demands of the global mobility engineering community.

AVL PEI operates test facilities at two S.E. Michigan locations: Plymouth and Ann Arbor.

AVL Powertrain Test Facilities

Plymouth test facilities are dedicated to development tasks, typically requiring more complex engine set-ups and using a range of emission and combustion analysis instrumentation. Plymouth facilities occupy approximately 10,000 square feet.

Ann Arbor test facilities are dedicated to powertrain validation and vehicle emissions testing and development. This dedicated facility allows AVL to optimize equipment and workflow for these specialized tasks and occupies 50,000 square feet on the south side of Ann Arbor, Michigan. These facilities are equipped with advanced testing equipment and instrumentation and staffed by highly trained automotive testing personnel. Engines, transmissions and powertrains of all sizes are routinely subjected to the most demanding range of test protocols.

Other test facilities available in the area include climatic chambers, acoustic test cells, and vehicle test tracks. These third-party facilities are used by the AVL engineering team as needed for particular projects.

Test-Site Control and Data Acquisition

AVL PEI powertrain and chassis dynamometer test-sites are equipped with digital control and data acquisition systems.

These advanced computer-based systems monitor and control engine and dynamometer operation to test requirements. They also acquire and record all necessary data from a complete array of digital, analog and frequency-sensing devices.

State-of-the-art software provides maximum flexibility in test definition. Research and development test plans requiring a very high level of data acquisition can be easily implemented. Durability and validation tests requiring a very high level of automation, cycle repeatability, scheduled starts and stops can also be routinely implemented. Fault conditions can be specified to automatically stop the test when pre-set conditions are exceeded. Test data can be easily off-loaded to all common hardware and software platforms.
