Euro 6 Emission Compliance

The next step in emission legislation will most likely be introduced on 1 April 2012 (new vehicles), and 1 April 2013 (all vehicles), provided the legislation is passed by 1 April 2009.

The latest amendment 16 sent 7 May 2008 to the European Parliament for approval, will further aggravate the Euro 6 legislation:

  • 10 mg/kWh NOx limit (reduced from 0,4 g/kWh)
  • 5 mg/kWh PM limit (reduced from 0,01 g/kWh)
  • particulate number limit (to be defined by 1 April 2009) to enforce the use of a closed particle filter
  • Adoption of WHDC (World Wide Harmonized Driving Cycle)
  • Verification of in-use emissions with portable emissions measurement sytems

The heavy duty Diesel engine then will need a fully flexible fuel injection system with at least 2200 bar - more likely 2500 bar injection pressure, high rates of cooled EGR, an advanced particulate filter and SCR system. With advanced combustion, including exhaust gas temperature management at part load, regeneration of the aftertreatment systems is ensured also with the WHDC procedure.
