The Lagrangian multiphase module of FIRE is the most comprehensive one offered in any commercial CFD code. Respectively the module is widely used to handle applications related to IC engine research and development, to exhaust gas aftertreatment, oil and mist separation, raindrop separation, and many, many general industrial processes.
In order to improve the efficiency of simulations covering long real times and / or large amounts of parcels / droplets, an option to call spray, wallfilm and general gas phase reaction modules within a steady gas solver calculation was implemented.
The basic idea of this approach is to call the above modules applying an artificial time step between the iteration steps of the steady simulation. The feature can be activated through GUI, if the ‘Steady’ option is chosen for run mode and additionally the spray module is activated.
If applicable the ‘Steady spray’ feature offers a reduction of the simulation time by factors typically between ~2 … 4. First experiences have proven the applicability of this new feature especially to SCR system simulation tasks resulting in strong performance benefits with minimum loss of accuracy.
