AVL developed a new adapter for the use with the VisioScope for optical investigation in the combustion chamber. This adapter has two functions; on the one hand it serves to apply a standard endoscope (diameter 4mm) in the usual easy handling way. As this is an application inside the combustion chamber, the endoscope is equipped with a cooling air supply port.
On the other hand, an optical fibre is integrated into the adapter that is arranged concentrically in the jacket regarding the adapter axis. The light is emitted on the front end of the adapter. Thus, the light axis and the visual axis of the endoscope are the same. This also explains that only an endoscope in straight view (0° line of sight) can be used.
This adapter results in the following advantages: Light is available for the examination with the endoscope in the direct vicinity of endoscope window. This means that a near field examination is possible, thus, surface and wall effects become visible.
For existing applications with two access bores to the combustion chamber, one for the endoscope and one for the optical fibre, this even means that this adapter can be applied in both bores. The adapter with optical fibre is mechanically compatible to the well known M10 standard adapters both regarding the installation into the cylinder head and the application of the endoscope. The adapter´s length is 310mm.
The adapter with optical fibre even can be used for a new application with strongly limited installation space. This especially holds true for those cylinder head designs where it is impossible to implement a second bore.
