AVL Particle Counter The Flexible and Fully PMP-Compliant Solution for Particle CountingParticle number measurement is the new requirement for Euro 5 certification of passenger cars with diesel engines (ECE-R83 amendment in 09/2011) and in the proposal for certification of heavy-duty engines for EURO VI and later.
Particle emissions in modern IC engines are coming to a range where they are just detectable with high sensitive instruments. The actual mass-based methods for the detection of emissions from modern EURO 5 engines are coming to their limit of detection especially during measurements after a Diesel Particle Filter (DPF).

The AVL Particle Counter measures the number concentration of non-volatile particles from engine exhaust emissions. This system consists of a dilution system (VPR) and a condensation particle counter (CPC). The device complies with the current ECE R83 legislation, which includes requirements for measuring the particle number per km. The AVL Particle Counter is highly compact and flexible in its application.
The dilution system comprises two dilution steps, including an evaporation unit with a dilution ratio range from 1:10 to 1:20,000 at excellent linearity. This technology allows samples to be taken from a CVS system, partial flow dilution tunnel or directly from the raw exhaust.
Application Range- Certification according ECE R83 procedure and Research & Development
- Sampling possible from CVS, Partial Flow Dilution Systems and tailpipe
- For certification only the measurement out of the CVS tunnel is possible
- For diesel and gasoline engines
- Measurement of pressures up to 200mbar
- On Engine – and Chassis dyno testbeds

- Fulfils all PMP requirements (UN ECE Regulation 83)
- Calibration with combustion aerosol to achieve realistic results
- Robust dilution system
- Plug & Play integration
- Samples can be taken from a CVS system, partial flow dilution tunnel or directly from the raw exhaust
- Combinable with all partial flow dilution systems
- Long availability, low cleaning and maintenance effort (thanks to the design of the primary dilution stage)
- Linearity check integrated into device
- All tests automated in the software: linearity, leak check, zero point
- Interface provided for validating the dilution system with calibration gas
