AVL FlexIFEM™More than just an amplifierThe pressures within the automotive industry in terms of time to market, cost of development and testing as well as the ongoing discussion about emission reduction are shifting focus of the calibration process to obtaining the best trade-off between fuel economy, emission level and driving performance. The accuracy and fast application of combustion analysis play a major role in calibration and quality assurance processes. For this reason AVL is introducing the recently developed family of amplifiers for combustion measurement – the FlexIFEM family.
The first member of this family, the AVL FlexIFEM™ Piezo, is available either as a single or as a dual channel amplifier. Various options allow cost-effective solutions for the amplification of piezo-electric charge signals, aimed at the highly accurate measurement of cylinder pressure. Apart from the standard functionalities of such a high-precision amplifier, e.g. highly dynamic drift compensation and consequent channel isolation, the FlexIFEM Piezo generation is a universal and compact instrument with the integrated multifunctional display of elements such as pressure curves or calculated engine speed.

The calibration of the amplifier as well as its parameterization for a certain measurement task is as easy as a mouse click. For local operation, an intuitive front keypad with an LCD display enables the verification of settings and measured values in the test cell. It can also be used for quick readjustment. With the internal non-volatile memory, the unintended manipulation of the settings is prevented and, in combination with the AVL IndiCom™ combustion measurement software, automatic adjustment to a given application will be possible.
With the option pmax, the FlexIFEM Piezo also serves as a peak cylinder pressure monitoring device providing real time cycle-by-cycle calculations or the averaging of pmax over a defined number of cycles. The pmax value is displayed and provided as an analog voltage output. Additionally, TTL signals for limit detection and relay output for the operation of alarm devices turn the FlexIFEM Piezo into a smart engine protection tool.
