Engine Manufacturers and Users, Suppliers, Universities, & Classification Companies at the 3rd AVL Large Engines TechDays in GrazAll Expectations of AVL were exceeded by far: More than 170 high-ranking specialists from 19 countries all over the globe came to follow an imposing programme, informative presentations and a lively panel discussion during AVL’s third conference on Large Engines which was held on May 28th and 29th in Graz, Austria. The third AVL Large Engines TechDays were dealing with the hot topic “Future Emissions Challenges and Alternative Fuels”. Representatives from 73 different companies – amongst these all renown international Engine OEM, 5 Universities, 4 Ship owners, 2 Classification societies and some members of the Mineral oil industry - were discussing solutions for future emission limits, effects of emission regulations, alternative fuels and the adherence to emission limits for different applications up to resulting economic aspects.
The conference addressed numerous questions and open topics in a good overview. On the one hand, a broad range of technical solutions regarding the reduction of emissions and fuel consumption has been highlighted. On the other hand, it was important to realise that solutions considering the field of transport safety along with environmental aspects – on an economical basis – can only be found by means of a close cooperation between engine designers and engine users.
The measure “Mission Impossible” – as the moderator put it – can only turn into a “Mission Possible” if the industry focuses on those tasks that will deliver appropriate solutions in reasonable periods of time. In connection with the aforementioned it became obvious that the two fuels diesel and gas will continue to play the primary role in the following years as well. Thus, it is very important to implement the technologies for these two fuels that are being developed as soon as possible. Furthermore, the opportunity should be taken to achieve substantially larger progresses using optimised overall systems, especially in the field of CO2 reduction.
The participants appreciated that AVL provides a forum in form of this conference, at which engine designers, component suppliers, operators of engines, and the oil industry can come together, can exchange opinions and discuss solutions with each other.
Conference chairman Karl Wojik: “In the future, this type of information exchange will play a vital role in the development of the proper products at the right time.”
