Large Engines

Customer Requirements

The large engine community is small but important. IC engines for ships, locomotives and power stations contribute to our world’s economy and prosperity. More than 90% of the world’s goods are transported by sea-going motor ships.

High performance, reliability and low fuel consumption have always been the traditional large engine issues. Nowadays the emission targets add to that and they are becoming more and more important.

Additionally, a short development time and a competitive sales price are the most important aspects of large engine production. Today only 30 – 36 months elapse from when we start to design a new medium speed engine until fully developed units are out in the field earning revenue.

The time pressure does not stop after the new engine project is completed and concerns not only the engine OEM but also the engine operator.

Unscheduled engine stoppages due to a failure cause disruption to schedule, loss of income and loss of reputation of builder and/ or operator. Avoiding long-term engine stoppage require immediate and qualified on-site support.
