Large EnginesCustomer RequirementsThe large engine community is small but important. IC engines for ships, locomotives and power stations contribute to our world’s economy and prosperity. More than 90% of the world’s goods are transported by sea-going motor ships.
High performance, reliability and low fuel consumption have always been the traditional large engine issues. Nowadays the emission targets add to that and they are becoming more and more important.
Additionally, a short development time and a competitive sales price are the most important aspects of large engine production. Today only 30 – 36 months elapse from when we start to design a new medium speed engine until fully developed units are out in the field earning revenue.
The time pressure does not stop after the new engine project is completed and concerns not only the engine OEM but also the engine operator.
Unscheduled engine stoppages due to a failure cause disruption to schedule, loss of income and loss of reputation of builder and/ or operator. Avoiding long-term engine stoppage require immediate and qualified on-site support.

AVL Approach The right balance of experience, innovation and customer support for leading large engines development. In the last 50 years AVL has developed more than 80 large engines for marine, locomotive and power generation applications.
Our design and development work is supported by our latest design analysis and engine simulation to ensure a “right-first-time” product, which will not require a lengthy development period for sorting out avoidable problems.
Our design and production engineers work closely with pattern shops, foundries, machine shops and component suppliers throughout the design process. This ensures that the engines we design can be produced at the optimum cost level and the simultaneous engineering reduces the project time considerably.
AVL’s generic development process which is closely linked to production planning, is used as a guideline to include all development steps needed to find the optimum solution meeting all legislative and market needs.
At AVL, customer service doesn't stop when the new engine project is completed. Our world-wide network of supporting staff enables us to keep a close eye at our customers’ progress and ensures rapid follow-up when necessary. As an independent partner, AVL offers a full range of customer services – from customer- tailored personnel training to immediate field support.
Through partnerships with internationally known companies as well as universities, we extend our service capability even more. We have access to experienced teams and technological know-how in system optimisation, e. g. controls, safety systems, operation and maintenance. |
