1D Gas-Exchange, Combustion and Engine-Out Emissions Simulation

The development of BOOST’s unique and advanced General Species Transport solver provides a high level of flexibility regarding fuel composition (E85, biodiesel, reformate) as well as the working gas itself (e.g. HCCI combustion, chemical reactions in the exhaust manifold, injection of a urea/water mixture into the exhaust line, injection and combustion of diesel in the exhaust line, full coupling of pollutant formation and catalytic chemical reactions). General species transport technology represents the state of the art in advanced engine performance and gas exchange simulation. It allows BOOST users to gradually increase the level of sophistication from standard to advanced applications, which until now were not capable of being simulated by traditional engine cycle simulation tools.

AVL BOOST typically models the entire engine consisting of intake system, in-cylinder combustion, pollutant (CO,NOx, HC) formation and exhaust system. Any type of charging system, i.e. two-stage charging, compund turbocharging, pressure wave supercharging, can be modeled. BOOST includes a library of plug and play components (air cleaners, heat exchangers, valves, catalysts) which are easily connected and populated in a user interface designed for engine engineers. Based on customer feedback and AVL’s own in-house engine development expertise, the BOOST library is continuously updated and enhanced to meet the requirements of modern engine layouts.

AVL BOOST offers a comprehensive set of combustion models including in-house models developed in AVL’s R&D labs. There are two categories of combustion models: those where the user defines the rate of heat release (ROHR), and those where BOOST calculates the ROHR for a given engine type under varying operating conditions. All combustion techniques can be readily used in combination with the pollutant formation models for NOx, CO and HC.

Just like in a real engine, BOOST allows access to operating parameters and results via actuators and/or sensors. In combination with the built-in optimization and control functionalities this enables users to optimize, calibrate and control the engine under steady-state and transient conditions. BOOST also offers a comprehensive coupling to external software such as FIRE, Matlab and iSIGHT.
