High-end Racing Applications

The Racing Application

The development goals are as follows:

  • Ensuring the durability of the engine over the entire racing distance
  • Increased engine performance
  • Increased consumption efficiency (fuel and oil), reduced fuel consumption
  • Weight reduction
  • Development of efficient cooling systems


The following development tasks are carried out on the test bed:

  • Basic verification of the mechanical engineering
  • Determination of the full load friction point
  • Input of steady-state data
  • Dynamic optimization
  • Development and optimization of special ECU functions (e.g. for launch control and traction control)
  • Dynamic endurance testing
  • Production tests: engine acceptance, running-in programs, leak check, performance tests
  • Development of gear shift and differential strategies

Dynamometer

A racing engine test bed has to be able to handle dynamic endurance testing (i.e. dynamic simulation of driver, vehicle and gear shift processes). That requires a dynamometer with very low mass inertia. The AVL DynoWheel dynamometer recommended by AVL for this application is characterized by its very low mass inertia of 0.77 kgm².
Using permanent-excitation DC machines with this minimal moment of inertia makes it possible to realistically simulate the actual wheel inertia so that simulation models can also be developed in real-time.

Data Acquisition – Automation - Control and Simulation

AVL PUMA Open allows high-end racing test runs to be easily configured or adapted using the graphical editor, as well as accurate data acquisition and evaluation, whereas EMCON and ISAC ensure exact dyno control and simulation of vehicle and driving conditions. The Track and Drive Editor allows a visualisation of the race track.

Actuators and Sensors

AVL offers a range of actuators for use on engine, transmission and powertrain test beds. Together with the automation System PUMA Open they allow fully automated test runs and simulations of driving conditions.
