Exhaust Aftertreatment System

To meet future severe emission legislation it will be mandatory to improve NOx and particulate emissions, further.
Even considering the potential of alternative combustion to reduce raw emission, exhaust aftertreatment systems (EAS) will be necessary to fulfil the much stringent emission limits.

If a best value of raw emission reduction due to alternative combustion compared to today's technology level is assumed, a particulate filter only will be sufficient for vehicles up to a weight of 1750kg. For heavier vehicles, it might be a necessity to use a combination of particulate filter and DeNOx catalyst to achieve the most stringent future emission limits.
Current diesel particulate filter technologies enables a reduction of particulate emission of more than 90 per cent.

Oxidation catalysts, which are already standard application on almost all production diesel cars, eliminate the typical diesel exhaust smell - a measure which mainly helps to improve the image of diesel powered vehicle in the past.
