The exhaust aftertreatment is more than just add-on equipment, it must be seen as part of a system including the vehicle, the drivetrain and the engine.
The aftertreatment system components are developed in close co-operation with the system suppliers. AVL's focus is on optimising the engine combustion, as well as the electronic control of the entire system for best conversion efficiency. The key for the required good oil control is the optimised mechanical structure and the right specifications for piston shape, piston rings and liner honing.
As most of the after-treatment systems are still in the development if not the research stage, an important aspect of AVL's work is to ensure their production feasibility and functionality under all real-life operating conditions with mechanical development and field testing.
