AVL CCBR - Carburetted Controlled Burn Rate

CCBR is a lean burn system for carburetted 4 - stroke engines. It is based on AVL’ s CBR (Controlled Burn Rate) technology (picture CBR system) which is a port deactivation concept developed by AVL and applied in passenger car mass production.

The CBR system features two different intake ports, one charge motion port and one filling port. Additionally a device for port-deactivation (slider, butterfly valve) is applied.
At part load points and lower engine speeds the filling port is switched off. So turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) is created at the correct time and place in the combustion chamber and a rapid and stable combustion occurs which allows to run the engine lean and hence to improve the fuel efficiency. At wide open throttle (WOT) both ports are opened and hence only little additional TKE is created to avoid a too rapid combustion.

The CBR concept was adapted to compact engines as CCBR system using a carburettor. This Newsletter describes the principle of CCBR and shows development results.
