20th International AVL Conference 'Engine & Environment'September 11th – 12th, 2008, Helmut-List-Halle, Graz, AustriaAnniversary Conference 20 years Engine & Environment 60 years AVL 120g CO2/km – What about Driving Fun and Costs?Global warming and the contribution the automotive industry can make to reducing green-house gases are topics of major public interest throughout the world. The EU Commission has proposed that the new vehicle fleet CO2 emissions be reduced by year 2012 to 120 g/km. 130 g/km should be achieved through powertrain and vehicle measures and a further reduction to 120 g/km through additional measures such as the widespread use of low-carbon fuels and energy sources. Following introduction of CO2 legislation in California it is to be expected that US Federal regulations will follow.
In order to achieve this goal, attractive, low CO2 vehicles must be developed and marketed. Only through the development of imaginative technical solutions addressing the complete system, vehicle, powertrain and fuel, will it be possible to achieve the ambitious goal of 120 g/km. The impact of these solutions on driving pleasure and costs will be the subject of the conference.
Engine & Environment 2008 will invite authorities from industry, academia and the political world to discuss solutions and strategies.
Amongst others, the following questions will be addressed:- Mobility and the growing world population
- Regulation, taxation, technology or social conscience – what will ensure the market success of low CO2 vehicles?
- Is a “gas guzzler tax” a solution?
- Can rationing of fossil fuels be avoided?
- Is full-corn fuel “healthy” for the world?
- Driving pleasure, fuel consumption, costs – a conflict with a solution?
- Is technology alone responsible? The influence of driver behaviour on CO2
- Will vehicle weight continue to increase?
- Will the trend to more powerful engines continue?
- New engine and transmission concepts
- Small is beautiful: 2 & 3 cylinder engines – low cost, low CO2
- Has the 2-stroke a chance of revival?
- Alternative combustion concepts
- Hybridisation and electrification
- Energy storage and recuperation systems
- Further development of existing powertrains and auxiliaries
- Energy and thermal management
- Reduction of friction and gas exchange losses
- etc
