AMA i60 COMBI

AVL AMA i60 COMBI

The AVL AMA i60 COMBI is a high-end emission system for certification/audit and R&D testing of small off-road engines, motorcycles and ATVs. It combines an exhaust gas measurement system with a CVS dilution system, resulting in a very compact and modular design. The intuitive, interactive, graphical user interface supports all the essential service and diagnosis functions and issue warnings in case of pending maintenance intervals.

AVL Approach

The AMA i60 COMBI contains analyzers with a wide dynamic measurement range for THC, CH4, NO/NOX, CO, CO2 and N2O, depending on the configuration. It is ideally suited for certifying spark-ignited combustion SORE engines with less than 19kw, in accordance with EPA 40 CFR Part 1054, as well as for developing and certifying motorcycle and ATVs on chassis dynamometers.

Benefits at a Glance

  • Fits easily to the exhaust system of any engine
  • Very compact CVS venturi unit for flexible integration
  • Optimized solution for SORE and motorcycle applications
  • Integrated maintenance planning and intelligent error handling
  • Complies with EPA 40 CFR Part 1054/1065, EU, CARB, as well as other worldwide exhaust emission regulations

Market Requirements

Gasoline-driven small off-road engines of up to 25 PS are subject to strict requirements according to the current EPA 40 CFR Part 1054/1065 regulation. In most cases motorcycles, generators and ATVs do not need CVS systems with 4 venturis. There is therefore a high demand for compact solutions for specific emission measurement.

Functions

The AVL AMA i60 COMBI comprises a gas analyzer bench for diluted modal and bag exhaust gas analysis combined with a constant volume flow dilution system (CVS). The concentration readings from the analyzer bench together with the volume flow measured with the sonic venturi of the CVS system are used to calculate the exhaust mass emissions in a very simple, reliable and accurate way. The analysis of the diluted sample gas is performed by means of NDIR, FID and CLD gas analyzers.

Options

The functionality of the AMA i60 COMBI can be extended by the following enhancements:

  • Several diagnostic checks in accordance with various emission regulations
  • Local language support of the user interface for all major languages
  • Integration of third party calibration devices (e.g. Horiba GDC 703) and heated sampling systems
  • Uninterruptible power supply for integrated industry PC

Applications

Analyzers

FID – Flame Ionization Detector
The AVL Flame Ionization Detector (FID) analyzer is designed for measurements of total hydrocarbon (THC) concentrations. It can also optionally measure methane (CH4) through a converter or via an analytical column (gas chromatography).

CLD – Chemiluminescence Detector
The AVL Chemiluminescence Detector (CLD) analyzer is designed for measurements of nitrogen oxides (NOX) concentrations in the exhaust gas. It can optionally measure NO and NOX simultaneously by means of a dual channel setup.

IRD - Infrared Detector
The AVL Infrared Detector (IRD) i60 analyzer is designed for measurements of the concentrations of various infrared active compounds like carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), hexane (C6H14), nitrous oxide (N2O) in the exhaust gas.

Key Features

  • Plug and play analyzers enable a fast change of analyzers, ensuring data integrity
  • The use of span gas cells (for IRD analyzers) enables an operation without span gases. In this way, operating and investment costs can be reduced
  • Excellent signal-to-noise ratio enables a higher measurement accuracy and better reproducibility
  • Cross interferences are minimized by means of thorough optimization measures. For example, the hot CLD fulfills EPA 40 CFR Part 1065 quench requirements without any cross corrections
  • By means of faster electronics, improved signal conditioning and the elimination of unnecessary dead volumes, response times are minimized
  • The gas analyzers are connected via high-speed CANopen interfaces, which enable sampling rates up to 50 Hz

iGEM AMA / iGEM CVS - Device Controller

The AMA i60 COMBI provides the iGEM AMA as well as the iGEM CVS control software (in terms of a multi-configuration). For communication with test cell automation systems, like SORE GEM, the AVL AMA i60 COMBI provides two separate AK interfaces (RS 232 or TCP/IP) for the AMA and CVS components. The new controller with the control computer iGEM AMA unites the many years of experience in development and operation of bench controller systems. The newly developed, intelligent iGEM platform constitutes the basis for optimum operation, high-grade diagnostics, easy connectivity and upgradeability, e.g. upgrade for EPA 40 CFR Part 1065 (only applicable to MC AMA i60 COMBI).

Available Types

The AMA i60 COMBI is available in two versions:

  • SORE AMA i60 COMBI for small off-road engines and generators
  • MC AMA i60 COMBI for motorcycles and ATVs
