Press Release: AVL’s Integrated Testing Solution for World’s largest Net-Zero Emissions Lab

AVL has been awarded the contract to provide nearly all the software and hardware for light and heavy duty vehicle, engine, and powertrain testing at the new California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) lab in Riverside, California. CARB has already broken ground on its new Southern California vehicle emissions testing and research facilities, set to open in Spring 2021, which will house one of the world’s most advanced vehicle emissions testing and research centers. As designed, it will also be the largest net-zero energy structure in the United States.

CARB’s mission is to promote and protect public health, welfare, and ecological resources through effective reduction of air pollutants while recognizing and considering effects on the economy. AVL CEO Helmut List explains, “As the world’s leading technology company in the field of powertrain systems, AVL will make a significant contribution to helping CARB realize its vision and make this lab a success.”

AVL’s equipment and hardware provides solutions to the challenges of multiple testing environments and propulsion technologies, including electrified powertrains. AVL will deliver dynamometers for chassis, engine and electrified powertrain testing, emission measurement devices and systems, fuel and air measurement instruments, and the associated control, simulation, and data acquisition I/O.

With experience working on projects of this scale, AVL will provide vehicle testing solutions with flexibility to adapt over time. Because mobility systems continue to evolve, AVL’s seamless lab operating system coupled with its hardware will futureproof the facility. With AVL’s configurable software, CARB will not only be able to quickly create and run tests but also monitor and control their systems and data from anywhere. A project of this scale and pace relies on AVL’s support: for this purpose, an AVL team will be in CARB’s lab in California day after day, also working with AVL experts from headquarters and around the world.

AVL’s North American headquarters are in the Detroit suburb of Plymouth, Michigan, with a regional office in Lake Forest, California.

AVL is the world's largest independent company for development, simulation and testing technology of powertrains (hybrid, combustion engines, transmission, electric drive, batteries and software) for passenger cars, trucks and large engines. The company has over 9,500 employees worldwide and achieved a turnover of 1,55 billion Euro in 2017.
