News from AVL’s Virtual Battery Development

Since lithium-ion batteries were first introduced the application areas have expanded considerably. Whether it’s mobile phones, laptops, power tools or applications from the mobility and transport sector, none of these solutions would even be conceivable today without this groundbreaking technology. Above all, the electrification of the powertrain, driven by the ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, is progressing ever faster and OEMs are continuously expanding their portfolio in the direction of electromobility.

These new solutions offer the greatest opportunities for growth, which is why all manufacturers are making every effort to bring these attractive solutions to the market as quickly as possible. The need for faster time-to-market, while improving the performance of electrified vehicles, is increasing daily. A fast and safe market launch of electrified vehicles can only be achieved through the extensive use of simulation-based development.

While the performance and efficiency of the battery cells is driven by complex interactions between physical and chemical reactions, the lifetime of an electric vehicle is massively influenced by the driving behavior of the end user as well as the environmental conditions. It is important to find a good compromise between development time and costs on the one hand, and the product price and any potential warranty claims on the other.

When developing electrified vehicles such as HEV, PHEV and BEV the primary aim is to find the best compromise between high performance, operational safety and battery lifetime. It is particularly important to select the right cell and develop the appropriate cooling concept for it. Safe operation with new and especially with aged cells can only be guaranteed with the right operating strategy.
Another important factor in this is the need for shorter development times to be able to offer faster and more cost-effective solutions that clearly distinguish themselves from the competition and thus offer a competitive advantage.

To answer all these key questions, AVL has developed a unique solution that enables engineers to virtually optimize the battery component with a focus on aging and lifetime. We use high-precision physical battery models to consider the complex processes in the cell, which are efficient enough to guarantee real-time capability.

Based on a partnership with Batemo, we are able to offer an integrated and innovative modeling and simulation technology. Batemo is a company founded in Karlsruhe, Germany which specializes in solutions for battery system development, such as battery cell modeling and simulations, extensive cell measurement data and detailed cell reports.

We’ve integrated Batemo's unique modeling and simulation technology into our AVL simulation toolchain, extending the AVL CRUISE™ M with a large library of various cell models, including cylindrical, pouch and prismatic cell types, detailed cell reports and comprehensive measurement data.

With the models of battery cells physically parameterized and validated by Batemo, paired with AVL's proven system simulation environment, we provide the ideal development tool to solve current and future challenges in battery development. This joint solution allows developers in the mobility and transportation industry to analyze battery behavior without necessarily being a specialist in cell chemistry. At the same time, they meet the highest requirements for accuracy and project turnaround time.
