Development

The development of an engine is initiated by engineering targets for the future vehicle fleet. To secure the technical data each development starts with the design of the combustion process itself. This is followed by R&D activities such as Mechanical Development and Performance and Emission Development.

The Virtual Vehicle Engine Testbed (VVETB) is designed to enable the engineer to observe the engine under its real cyclic behavior where at the same time the mechanical influence of the testbed is eliminated. Such setup allows improved development and calibration and the frontloading of traditionally on-road vehicle tests to the engine testbed. An integration of models to represent vehicle and driving environment completes the VVETB.
AVL offers mechanical testing for the verification and validation of engines, transmissions, exhaust gas aftertreatment and hybrid systems. Mechanical development activities cover all areas from component testing and engine testbeds, right up to full vehicle validation.
Supporting the task of durability development and fatigue strength assurance is a vital step during the process of creating a new engine and engine components. The goal is to ensure, with the smallest possible testing effort, the lowest possible number of warranty claims and lifecycle cost once the vehicle is launched on the market.
