Bringing the benefits of the fuel cell to the racetrack

Fuel Cell technology has been gaining market share steadily over the last decade, leading to a strong industry position. It has a wide range of applications, from Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV) on the road, to trains, marine and stationary powerplants. At AVL RACING we are closely involved with the development of solutions for all these applications, including high performance and racing applications.
 

The Right Solutions for the Right Applications


We have more than 15 years’ experience and have executed over 110 customer projects. This gives us the know-how to help you choose the right technology for your use case.

For race applications, the fuel cell technology we use is the Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC). This uses a hydrogen fuel with a purity of at least 99.97 %, which is converted into electricity in the fuel cell. The process produces energy without the need for combustion, resulting in near-zero emissions.

The experts in our engineering department have already been involved in a variety of projects studying the applications of PEMFC technology in motorsports. We have drawn on AVL’s broader fuel cell experience, and the unique Vehicle Dynamics Simulation (VSM) tool. Used in combination with our highly detailed PEMFC customer models, we have conducted comprehensive studies of a variety of system architectures and suppliers. This has enabled us to examine their effectiveness in racing applications at the racetrack.

 

Overcoming Challenges


We understand that PEMFC applications must overcome particular weight, packaging and cooling challenges. AVL has already mastered these challenges thanks to its heavy investment in research into this technology, and we are drawing on these learnings. This enables us to offer the full PEMFC development cycle in-house. This includes:

  • Testing and benchmarking
