VOLVO 450 HP DRIV-E POWERTRAIN CONCEPT To allow people to experience for themselves what driving the current high end of the new Volvo Driv-E engine family’s performance spectrum feels like, Volvo and AVL launched the next high-performance gasoline engine project. The stated aim was to bring the new Volvo 2l engine to the top performance level of 450 hp and achieve the highest engine output per liter ever to be achieved by a four-cylinder engine. “The engine was to be presented together with Volvo in Aachen, where participants would be able to test-drive it in an S60 demonstrator vehicle. We only had a few months’ time for development, so it was certainly a very ambitious project. Thanks to the good collaboration with Volvo and AVL, internally, we finished the high-performance engine in time for the presentation in Aachen, which was a great success,” according to Kapus. To achieve the top performance of 450 hp, the engine utilizes two gasdriven turbochargers. There were several reasons for choosing a biturbo configuration: the limited installation space that did not allow for a large mono turbocharger, as well as the better response characteristics achieved by two smaller turbochargers. In order to obtain satisfactory low end torque and transient response despite the big dimensioning of the main turbochargers, a 48V e-compressor was added. “The e-compressor supplies the two con- HIGH-PERFORMANCE ENGINE WITH E-COMPRESSOR FOR FIAT/ALFA ROMEO Increasing specific engine performance was at the center of an engineering project conducted at AVL last year. Using a high-performance variant of the Fiat/Alfa Romeo 1.75 l turbocharged engine, fitted with an e-compressor, a total output of 330hp was achieved. The engine was presented jointly with Fiat at the Vienna Motor Symposium in 2013. At the time, it had the highest specific output to be delivered by a four-cylinder gasoline engine (140 kW/l). In a further development stage, fine-tuning activities at AVL raised the engine power even further to 350 hp and were incorporated into the AVL Alfa Giulietta TGDI High Performance Demonstrator. “We attracted a lot of attention with this sports car demonstration vehicle, which we optimized additionally in a number of > The Volvo high-performance engine with e-compressor and bi-turbocharger.
