1 1 F O C U S the strictest in the world. OEMs in the States are obliged to prove lowest vehicle emissions under all driving conditions across the entire vehicle lifetime. The specified test cycles only make up one part of Emission Compliance”, Günter Fraidl, AVL Senior Vice President Business Field Passenger Car Powertrain, explained. To help OEMs meeting RDE or CO2 fleet targets, robust and costefficient solutions are needed. In addition, such technologies must not only comply with RDE and SULEV standards today and in future, AVL M.O.V.E. iS AND FINITE ELEMENT METHOD With the introduction of Real Driving Emissions, OEMs must be capable of ensuring that vehicles operate almost free of emissions practically under all operating conditions. “In the past, optimizations of pollutant emissions were made in the main operating range. The rest of the operating range was mainly optimized by focusing on consumption, performance or component protection. Today, with the introduction of Real Driving Emissions, emissions optimizations must be made across the entire operating range. Furthermore, in the future, engineers have to be increasingly capable of efficiently identifying and statistically evaluating all potentially emission-critical events in the context of RDE driving cycles”, Fraidl pointed out. The solution for this challenge, according to the AVL experts, lies in a new method which is analogous to the Finite Element Method in strength calculation. By means of this methodology, emission-critical events, which are taken from the collected data, are automatically identified and mathematically described – with AVL DRIVE 4.0. In terms of the dynamic measurement of vehicle emissions on the road, vehicle engineers can now draw on AVL M.O.V.E iS – a consistent complete solution for RDE, comprising several technology components: The AVL M.O.V.E. GAS PEMS iS (portable emissions measurement system) module allows the measurement of exhaust gas emissions, whereas the AVL M.O.V.E PN PEMS iS module ensures the efficient measurement of » THE MIX OF GASOLINE, DIESEL, HYBRID OR FULLY ELECTRIC VEHICLES IS ESSENTIAL FOR OEMS « » AVL OFFERS THE ENTIRE MEASUREMENT CHAIN, WHICH IS NEEDED FOR AN EFFICIENT RDE DEVELOPMENT. « MICHAEL WEISSBÄCK, D e p u t y V i c e P r e s i d e n t P o w e r t r a i n S y s t e m s GÜNTER FRAIDL, S e n i o r V i c e P r e s i d e n t P o w e r t r a i n S y s t e m s but also be tailor-made and individual for each of the customer’s requirements. Michael Weißbäck, Deputy Vice President Business Field Passenger Car Powertrain, said: “AVL offers the necessary tools and know-how to increase efficiency and reduce costs in development in a sustainable way. For instance, AVL is able to increase efficiency and add more transparency to development activities by means of a model-based test environment”. Photos: © AVL
