/ 17 1996 The Sound of Silence – Vehicle Refinement Strategies Vehicle noise was again on the agenda of the “Engine & Environment” conference of the year 1996 entitled “Sound of Silence”. Many different aspects were discussed: Dr. Dieter Gottlob of the Berlin Environmental Authority provided the introduction to the topic and gave a lecture on the effects of traffic noise on health. Prof. Dr. Ernst Pucher‘s presentation (Vienna University of Technology) illustrated the “Optimization of the vehicle-tires-road system”; Dr. Rudolf Bisping (S.A.S Systems) referred to the “Psychological aspects of the sound quality of vehicle interior noise”; Dipl.-Ing. Hans Schedl (et. al.) described the challenges facing automotive acoustic engineers under the title “Sound and Silence – Is it possible?” On behalf of AVL, Dr.-Ing. Gotthard Rainer presented simulation methods for engine and vehicle acoustics, illustrating their application and providing an outlook on future areas of use. The conference participants were invited to visit the new AVL Acoustic Center opened in 1996, after which they were treated to a very special surprise: the performance of a piece of music commissioned by Helmut and Kathryn List, entitled “LISTen to a life in motion” in the foyer of Graz Opera. Five representations in music composed by “Quintetto accento” ence was: “Quiet vehicles will become a reality if this objective is seen as an interdisciplinary task, and if road builders, traffic planners and not least the vehicle operators all contribute their share in addition to the vehicle developers.” (“In-between Spaces”, “Pulsar”, “Sound in Balance,” “Pan’s Reflection” and “Symbiosis”) created an interaction of synthetic sources of sound, acoustic instruments and the voice of Italian vocalist Norina Angelini. “Pulsar”, one of the five movements was described by the artists as follows: “Starting from the alienated sound of an engine, this movement attempts to convey the world and poetry of noise to the audience. Based on the sound of a smoothly running engine, the rhythmic structure of muffled percussion instruments opens a perception of its inherent rhythmic pulse, as it takes its course – embedded in the instrumental sound texture.” reaching to the transmission and the interaction between tires and the road surface. And it was precisely for this reason that experts from the most diverse disciplines attended the conference; they included Prof. Dr. Josef R. Möse (Hygiene Institute Graz), Dipl.-Ing. Peter Röpke (Volkswagen AG), Dr. Thomas Reinhart (Cummins Engine Company) and Dr. Rupert Hochrainer (Semperit Reifen AG). The conclusion drawn by the engineering experts of the third “Engine & Environment” confer- Kathryn and Helmut List with the artists of „Quintetto accento“.
