/ 19 ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS AND COST OPTIMIZATION ›1992 ›2005 1992 Electronic Systems - What Can They Do? The fifth “Engine & Environment” conference on 27th and 28th July 1992 was dedicated to the contribution that electronic systems make to optimum environmental compatibility of the powertrain and how they can help to support the driver. In his introductory speech, Dr. Heiko Barske (Volkswagen AG) described the important role that electronic systems of the third generation were playing in automobiles at the time – in the form of electronic ignition, control units and vehicle networks, but also in terms of increasing safety and driving comfort. Dr. Barske also predicted another ability for the fourth generation of electronic systems (at that time still under development), namely what is today referred to as the “connected powertrain”: “Vehicle electronics will go beyond the limits of the automobile so that the vehicle will become incorporated in its traffic environment.” Dr. Friedrich Quissek (AVL), Dr. Otto Holzinger (Robert Bosch GmbH) and Dr. Erwin Achleitner (Siemens AG) described the extent to which electronics determine the management of gasoline engines and presented technologies that were about to be applied in volume production. In their presentations, they illustrated the fusion of mechanical engineering and electronics. Toshihiko Omori (Nippondenso), Klaus Käsmeier (BMW Motoren GmbH Steyr) and Dr. Dieter Seher (Robert Bosch GmbH) referred to possibilities of electronic systems in diesel engines. Dipl.-Ing. Jochen Langheim’s (RWTH Aachen) paper was particularly far-sighted: In his presentation entitled “Electronics in hybrid and electric vehicles” he gave an overview of the electronic systems used, from powertrain control to vehicle control – including recuperation of kinetic energy – to vehicle dynamics and the communication among various components in the vehicle. The last part of the conference was devoted to traffic guidance and driver information systems in Europe (PROMETHEUS project) and the USA, with representatives of Daimler-Benz, Fiat, Steyr-Daimler Puch Fahrzeugtechnik and Graz University of Technology introducing current and future projects. Heiko Barske, Friedrich Quissek, Oto Holzinger, Rudolf Pischinger, Hans Leopold, Jochen Langheim
