/ 3 25 Years AVL International Conference “Engine & Environment” Table of Contents Editorial The contributions of the past 25 years illustrate that future-oriented developments have always been addressed well ahead of time at the “Engine & Environment“ conferences. Speakers reported about trends and solutions, which are clustered in the following topics: / 7-13 Fuel Consumption and Emissions / 14-15 Gasoline versus Diesel Engines / 16-17 Vehicle Noise / 18 Alternative Fuels / 19-20 Electronic Systems and Cost Optimization / 21-23 Driver-Car-Powertrain / 24-30 Electrification/Hybridization / 31 All topics of the 25 “Engine & Environment” conferences at a glance The “Engine & Environment” conference series was launched in 1988 as an independent, neutral and international platform to promote the interdisciplinary discussion of essential powertrain technology challenges in a broad social context. The conferences deal with substantial aspects of powertrain technology far beyond their relevance for the moment and focus on possible approaches for the future. More than 300 people attend the conference every year, including high-level decision-makers and experts from the automotive industry, science, politics and market research. Besides presenting the focal topic – whereby the holistic view presented by keynote speakers is substantiated by in-depth presentations given by high-level experts – the conference is also an excellent venue for the exchange of opinions. The panel discussion and the social events promote intensive discussions among the participants. To mark the 25th “Engine & Environment” conference, this anniversary brochure takes a look back over the past 25 years, starting with the first conference in 1988. The overview shows that the AVL conferences have always presented and discussed topics and technologies that had a significant impact on powertrain development in the 10 to 15 years that followed. You will find many examples of this vision on the following pages of this brochure. This review of the past clearly demonstrates how AVL and its “Engine & Environment” conferences have always looked ahead – and this is precisely what we intend to continue to do for our customers in the future. Prof. Dr. h. c. Helmut List, Chairman and CEO AVL
