All air-conducting components, in particular the intake and exhaust ports in the cylinder head, determine the in-cylinder �� ow and thus have a decisive in�� uence on the com��ustion characteristic. When evaluating these in�� uences an accurate, reproduci��le measurement of ��ualitative and ��uantitative �� ow characteristics is essential. The method to determine Tippelmann swirl and tumble numbers is based on the integral detection of the momentum components em��edded in the cylinder �� ow. It has ��een developed and patented by AVL Tippelmann and is now established at all major engine manufacturers. APPLICATION AVL Tippelmann �� ow test ��enches are suita��le for a wide range of applications, from motorcycle, car and truck up to big engines. The characteristic values measured allow a detailed analysis of the in�� uence of the air-conducting components on the in-cylinder �� ow.
