1 3 F O C U S chief engineers and design-release engineers as key roles is interlinked with traditional specialist areas and departments to combine higher-ranking capabilities with existing specialist expertise in the best possible way. Particularly subjects like Design-to- Cost, Design-to-Manufacturing and Design-to-Assembly are examined in depth to fully meet the requirements of series development. One unique aspect of AVL is that the core team will frequently accompany the series project from an early pre-development stage onward and incorporate its respective specialist knowledge later on in the various development stages – complemented by the series development specialists. Helfried Sorger: “This transcends the boundaries between the traditional pre- development stage and series development, which sometimes might be quite rigid. This interdisciplinary collaboration effort produces innovative and production related solutions at a very early stage, both where the traditional drive system – engine and transmission – and electrified drive systems are concerned. In the relatively new field of vehicle battery development, in particular, this has already been successfully implemented.” COVERING THE ENTIRE VALUE ADDED CHAIN By extending its range of services that now comprises everything from basic development to turn-key series development, including the integration of the classic or electrified drive system in the vehicle, AVL covers the entire value added chain. Helfried Sorger: “AVL’s broad-based entry into the field of base-powertrain turn-key series development is a major and logical step in the direction of being a development partner to OEMs and capable of covering all development steps – from initial concept and series development all the way to series production launch management. This gives us the capability to serve our customers in the global automotive industry better and more comprehensively than ever before.” < > Turn-key project engine derivative development: the parts in blue are developed from AVL specialists to the new application.
