> For attribute engineering projects, the AVL Vehicle Simulation Model (AVL VSM) is a very important tool which has been successfully tried and tested for many years in motor racing. 2 1 F O C U S Another important tool for attribute engineering, in addition to the already mentioned AVL DRIVE tool, is the AVL Vehicle Simulation Model (AVL VSM), which has been successfully tried and tested for many years in motor racing. “This allows us to draw on the extensive driveability knowledge we have collected in the field of vehicle dynamics simulation. Today, the VSM vehicle model, employed for optimizing road vehicles, is used by several OEMS to optimize the performance of their vehicles by means of virtual methods,” Schöggl adds. FROM VIRTUAL DEVELOPMENT TO THE SERIES-PRODUCTION VEHICLE The scope and complexity of attribute engineering projects at AVL differ widely – even purely virtual vehicle developments are possible, as Mario Oswald, Lead Engineer Driveablity and Simulation, describes by the following example: “If an OEM is considering putting a new sports car on the market, we can build a simulation model of this vehicle and optimize it virtually. In many projects, we accompany our customer from virtual optimization and prototype engineering all the way to start of production. Here at AVL, there is a very close collaboration between virtual development and the specialists working on the real vehicle. Optimizations and objective assessments can generally be made at any phase of the development process – from the virtual vehicle model and the testbeds to the prototypes and series production vehicles.“ For optimizing vehicles in terms of a specific attribute, AVL can choose from a large number of experts. “Based on a combination of the measurements conducted, precise analysis and the great expertise of our specialists, we can optimize the entire vehicle, not just the powertrain, but far beyond it too. Advanced tools such as AVL DRIVE and the AVL VSM vehicle simulation enable us to test the effects of changes made to certain components on the overall vehicle, both virtually and on the real prototype. The result of this process is ultimately a vehicle that perfectly fulfills the technical requirements and the brand character – and thus the end-customer’s wishes,” Peter Schöggl says, summarizing the goals of attribute engineering in vehicle development at AVL. <
