Contents and insights of “The Miracle of the Ear” project are available on the AVL Cultural Foundation’s Arts & Science app. 2 3 F O C U S Photos: AVL, Shutterstock A sound may strike you as familiar or invoke some sort of association, but it may also be unpleasant – you will notice all these things if you listen to the sound a vehicle makes. AVL has been involved in vehicle acoustics since the 1960s, and has had a significant impact on this field of research in vehicle and engine development. The interdisciplinary nature that distinguishes the work of AVL’s acoustic engineers is also one of the key objectives of the AVL Cultural Foundation. And acoustics and interdisciplinarity are also terms at the heart of the AVL Cultural Foundations’s Arts & Science project “The Miracle of the Ear.” On behalf of the AVL Cultural Foundation, the artist Friedrich Kleinhapl embarked on a unique voyage of discovery: Friedrich Kleinhapl reflects on the “sound of the universe” and rhythm as well as aspects of acoustics research. And at the center of it all is a focus on the highly evolved organ that makes all of this possible for humans to engage with – the Human Ear. FASCINATING SINCE TIME IMMEMORIAL Starting with the myth of primordial sound (“In the beginning there was sound.”) and Pythagoras, who was the first person to express musical intervals by numeral proportions, all the way to Leonardo da Vinci, Johannes Kepler and Fritz- Albert Popp, mankind has at all DOWNLOAD APP NOW > times been fascinated by sound. Friedrich Kleinhapl consulted scientists, physicists, psychologists, physicians and musicologis to hear what each had to say. The most important revelations were put together and written down for the Arts & Science project. With its Arts & Science initiative, the AVL Cultural Foundation has taken a big step forward in promoting constructive interaction between science and the arts, exploring the different spheres of human creativity and launching significant innovations. The Arts & Science platform outlines “The Miracle of the Ear” in all its different phases of perception, revealing all kinds of captivating insights about the world of hearing. <
