editorial The ever more stringent legal requirements for fleet CO2 emissions and exhaust emission behavior in real driving (RDE), as well as the growing connectedness of vehicles, have greatly increased the significance of real driving operation in the development process. On top of that, customers are demanding vehicles that combine efficiency and comfort with a positive driving experience. The use of AVL development environments allows close interaction between simulation and test bed tests, making it possible to perform tests comparable to those run in real-world road traffic. The entire driving environment, along with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), is simulated realistically. Moreover, any drive components can be modeled, allowing these to be tested early on in the development stage, fully integrated as part of the whole system. It is this combination of simulation and test-bed test that gives automotive developers a valuable tool, not only for fine-tuning emission and consumption behavior in real driving operation, but also for ensuring functional safety, correct functionality 3 F O C U S and comfort. Together, we can thereby reach the goal of developing modern and environmentally sound drive systems that are as attractive as they are affordable for buyers.
