Construction Equipment Driveability Assessment and Development
AVL has been dealing with the objective assessment of driveability for more than 15 years. The initial objective was to derive a quantitative target portfolio from subjective evaluations based on human experience.
The developed tool captures various driveability related sensor and CAN bus signals, such as longitudinal acceleration, engine speed, vehicle speed, pedal position, etc. These inputs are collected by the DMU (DRIVE Main Unit) and passed on to the assessment software for further processing and analysis.
About 100 different driving modes (e.g. drive away, hill climbing, gear upshift or shuttle maneuver) are detected automatically and within them more than 400 driveability related criteria are rated in real-time.
The physical values of these criteria are calculated by means of models and fuzzy logic to "driveability ratings" (1 to 10 scale), which are regularly correlated with specialists' subjective perception.
Driveability describes the qualitative assessment of the vehicle's response to the driver's input. The tool provides objective real-time assessment of vehicle driveability based on driver's impression with automatic detection and categorization of operation modes. It can be used for comprehensive drivability analysis and benchmarking and as an acceptance tool for quality assurance of drivability. Based on a benchmark analysis, driveability quality targets are defined and used as a reference for the evaluation of driveability at all stages within a target driven development process.
For construction equipment specific maneuvers/criteria can be evaluated such as power shovel stabilization.
The tool can also be combined with most calibration tools (e.g. Inca, Canape, ...) for short loops in engine or transmission calibration.
Typical applications are:
- Driveability benchmarking
- Shift quality assessment and improvement
- Combination with sound engineering
- Optimize compromises between comfort, performance and consumption
- Ride comfort assessment (!Work Space Regulation!)
- Target setting
