While much of the development process is frontloaded in simulations or on the testbed, a large proportion still takes place in the vehicle. And as legislation becomes more stringent and new technologies, such as hybrid and electrified systems and ADAS bring additional complexity, the testing effort increases dramatically.
AVL Smart Mobile Solutions™ are a range of testing and calibration tools that are designed to manage these activities and reduce testing effort. You can use them with existing vehicle setups for both passenger and commercial vehicles.
Complete Process Support
We have designed our Smart Mobile Solutions to support you throughout the whole process, resulting in increased overall productivity and test efficiency. As well as enabling tasks to be conducted in the vehicle, they also support tasks you conduct in the office, such as preparing tests and analyzing results. They also support the shifting of tests from the road into simulation or testbed environments.
The development and widespread acceptance of electrified powertrains has led to a significant increase in complexity. In Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), for example, the environmental dependencies of the powertrain, such as charging and connected powertrain functions, are highly complex. Verification and validation are still required to prove that customer-relevant functions are available during all operating conditions, and that relevant targets are met.
As the same time, there is also a transition of processes and methods for system and software development. This allows a late finalization of function lists and functional targets, which do not need to be set in stone at the concept phase. It requires many tests to be validated in a short timeframe, and also for every update.
We have created a package within our Smart Mobile Solutions to support these activities. The Calibration Package includes functions which support you in managing this complexity.
The Maneuver Assistance, as part of the calibration package features a customer-specific library allowing you to set up ‘playlists’ of maneuver sequences prior to beginning tests in the vehicle. This easily edited library can be organized according to your specifications. As a virtual co-driver, it guides you through the test using audio-visual feedback, online evaluation and touch-screen functionality. After the test, the system automatically prepares a customized report.
Putting ease-of-use at the forefront, this package enables a less experienced driver to conduct ‘classical’ driveability tests and functional safety testing. The system quickly identifies and visualizes deviations, resulting in smaller tolerance margins. Eliminating the need for a co-driver, it reduces manpower costs while increasing productivity.
One of the biggest challenges for the ramp-up of advanced driver assistance systems and the launch of autonomous vehicles are testing and validation. During the development phase the engineer performs most of the tests in the vehicle, like functional testing and performance validation. This also applies to homologation tests, such as UN-ECE and NCAP.
Several times a month, they also deploy new software versions and data sets, which require additional functionality and performance tests. For this reason, every OEM has developed extensive lists of specific maneuvers and tests. More often than not, their execution requires two engineers, who receive no direct validation or feedback on whether the maneuvers or tests have been executed correctly. As a consequence, they cannot compare individual test results, meaning that – in a worse-case scenario – they have to repeat the tests.
We have created two packages within our Smart Mobile Solutions to support these activities. Firstly, the calibration package includes functions which will support you in managing the many functional and performance validations. And secondly, the Smart ADAS Analyzer package supports you during the homologation tests, such as NCAP.

The second package is the AVL Smart ADAS Analyzer. This independent open tool supports you during the planning, execution and reporting of NCAP testing on the proving ground. Our innovative tool can also be used to correlate results from different testing environments, such as the dyno or simulation activities.
Our Smart ADAS Analyzer includes ADAS test databases for worldwide test and certification regulations, which are always up-to-date. Ideal for coping with rapidly changing test requirements, it features a simple, workflow-optimized user interface which guarantees usability. Less configuration is required, resulting in fewer errors and, therefore, faster results.
Employing a well-proven data processing core, this software solution reduces preparation and testing effort on the proving ground and supports resource planning. Instant validation and scoring during test execution saves you time and increases quality.
In addition, Smart ADAS Analyzer features open interfaces which enable you to seamlessly integrate them into third part test equipment controllers. This eliminates manual configuration to deliver extraordinary productivity and accuracy.
Real Driving Emissions (RDE) legislation includes the road as an important environment for emission testing and certification. Route requirements must fulfil strict criteria, such as speed range or driver behavior.
This means that OEMs need to carry out lots of type-approval tests on the road to ensure RDE compliance. Furthermore, commercial vehicles require in-service conformity or PEMS testing to comply with Euro VI regulations. Non-Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM) must also comply with in-service monitoring requirements.
To support this testing endeavor, we have created the RDE Vehicle Package. It enables one-click route generation on predefined start and end points on a map, and offers you real time route guidance during the test. Online evaluation and visualization of RDE test criteria allow you to adjust your driving to meet predefined requirements such as speed, distance driven, dynamic behavior and trip share.
Part of an RDE test – or a complete test – can be re-run if required, for calibration purposes. The system will guide you to ensure the required testing conditions are met, including speed and when to shift gear.
There is also our Smart Mobile Solutions Simulation Package. This moves outdoor testing to the testbed and the simulation environment to virtually investigate critical scenarios upfront.
Our Simulation Package allows you to easily and efficiently reproduce RDE cycles and road measurements in the lab. It enables realistic real-world RDE route and speed profiles to be generated in order to analyze the most relevant testing conditions. Furthermore, it can generate a statistically significant number of RDE compliant test conditions. In just a few clicks, RDE cycles can be defined using online maps to process existing GPS traces and create completely new RDE tests.
Finally, there is our ISC Vehicle Package. Designed for commercial vehicles and NRMM, it supports your testing activities with online evaluation and visualization of PEMS test criteria. This includes criteria such as cold-start conditions, total accumulated work, trip share, events and more.
Together, our Smart Mobile Solutions Packages support a right-first-time testing approach. They reduce the need for vehicle prototypes and make better use and re-use of measurement data. All of which increases efficiency, reduces time and testing effort and cuts costs.
