Crank Angle Encoder of 365-Series
AVL Approach
365C for standard mounting at the free crankshaft, 365X for mounting at the shaft between engine and dynamometer and 365R "mass free marker disc" designed for racing applications, small sized engines or engines with limited access to the crank shaft.
Benefits at a Glance
- Small and compact design for easy handling and minimum influence to crank shaft
- High resistance against vibration, temperature and electrical interference
- Only one mark trace with integrated trigger
- Suitable for racing application
- The marker disk at 365X is manufactured to customer's specification

365C – AVL´s standard solution:
The Angle Encoder 365C is a high precision optical pickup used for angle-based indicating measurements and torsional analyses on internal combustion engines. The Crank Angle Encoder 365C is mounted at the free end of the shaft. The Encoder has proved its worth both on very rough-running single-cylinder research engines and on high-speed racing engines. It tracks every speed change of your engine with utmost precision – and therefore perfectly suitable for dynamic measurements as torsional and vibrational analysis and engine starting tests.
365X – The Individual Customer Solution:
The Angle Encoder 365X ensures precision-assignment of measurement value to degree CA even when mounted on the drivetrain between the engine and the dynamometer. The marker disc is manufactured due to customer's specification. This Angle Encoder works on the "transmission light principle" which makes the system immune to interference from scattered light and therefore increases the signal quality.
365R – mass less marker disc:
There is a particular advantage for the user of the Angle Encoder 365R, no additional marker disk is needed which has to be fitted on the crank shaft. That means the crank shaft is not subject to any additional mass/mass inertia. Only original rotating parts are used and marker trace is applied to this. When it comes to making the mark track on the flange, it is important on the one hand that the trigger mark and angle marks are the correct length to obtain the best light intensity ratio for the trigger threshold. On the other hand, the arrangement of the trigger mark and angle marks in relation to one another also has to be correct to ensure the lowest possible sensitivity to relative motion between the mark track and the optical head.
AVL also provides application support for design and for machining the angle marks to the crank shaft wheel to ensure acceptable signal quality during operation.
