5th International Symposium on Development Methodology

„Onto the next round“ – that could be the motto for the 5th International Symposium on Development Methodology where engineers and managers responsible for powertrain development will meet again for top-class discussions at the Wiesbaden Kurhaus.

We look back on two dynamic years in which all branches were characterized by intense development efforts. The expected diversification of propulsion systems is progressing and many new solutions would be impossible without efficient and reliable development methodology. Of particular interest will be news of progress made by the participants of the last Symposium – including Audi, BMW, Daimler, Ford, GM, Honda, Magna, Mahindra, Porsche, VW, Continental, GETRAG, ZF, as well as well-known engineering companies and universities – including new technical topics.

The challenges continue to increase. On the one hand, they are driven by technology trends. For future powertrains, the pressure increases to meet CO2 targets without sacrificing market appeal, a scenario that will be exacerbated by the increasing concern over real-world driving emissions. Electric mobility is currently clouded with blissful ignorance. Soon we will see who can take the crucial step to bring robust and cost-effective solutions successfully into the market The strong differences in development methodology throughout the global market also deserve great attention. This has direct implications for the use of development methods, particularly in international development operations but also in the local organizations. At the upcoming conference we will ask which solutions to this topic can be expected. Robust products are in demand and a requirement for competitiveness. But how robust are the development methodologies themselves? Is the gap increasing between methodology innovation and what arrives at the organizations and their development processes?

Without doubt, more powerful tools and algorithms are developing. A lasting effect can only be achieved if they are integrated in robust and reliable development processes. Are creativity and standardization in conflict? One approach may be developing platforms that can address both aspects. Furthermore, the effective convergence of calculation, simulation and testing is a prerequisite for robust solutions. We are looking forward in anticipation to what concepts will be presented.

Ultimately everything must harmonize – the tools, the organization and especially the people who have to competently navigate in an increasingly demanding environment. Their enthusiasm must not be lost! In an increasingly automated and tool-based environment personal contact and flow of information takes on a particular importance – this applies doubly, given the exchanges planned for this symposium.
