The development of modern vehicles with extremely complex powertrain concepts puts high requirements on new development and validation methods with the associated tools. In order to save costs and reduce development times, road tests are increasingly being transferred to vehicle testbeds and replaced by simulation. Transferability and a balance between the individual test environments (off-line simulation, hardware-in-the-loop, component testbed, vehicle testbed, road, etc.) must be guaranteed.
New vehicles must be tested and certified in relation to many different aspects before the operating license is issued. These aspects include, for example, driving noise, performance, consumption, emission and electromagnetic compatibility. AVL offers emission, fuel economy, greenhouse gas test, NVH and EMC solutions for vehicles on a chassis dynamometer, from small motorcycle and passenger cars up to light and heavy-duty trucks.
Performance, emission and fuel consumption are base development targets causing dedicated demands on development solutions for powertrains and vehicles applying combustion engines. Regardless in which testing environment the development activities need to be supported with powerful and smart tools and solutions also challenging the today expected excellence in efficiency.
Emission Regulation is moving forward. Euro 6 has arrived in Europe, 40CFR1065 and 40CFR1066 in the US as well as the new Worldwide Light Duty Test Procedure has been published as Global technical regulation. And more challenges to come for the different applications. Measuring hybrid powertrains with their complexity, new measurement methods, changed procedures and real driving emissions are just a few examples.
Emission Certification of combustion engines used with commercial vehicle powertrains like for trucks, buses, off-road stationary or mobile maschinery or as large engine version in ships, vessels or power generators will be verified on the exhaust emissions on an engine test bed.
