Taking co-simulation on the engine testbed to the next level

Using highly realistic simulation tools to test a vehicle and its drivetrain on the testbed makes it possible for you to perform tests with high reproducibility. These tests, conducted early in the development process, can be exhaustive, and can consider any number of vehicle variants.

The alternative to this approach is to build a complete prototype vehicle for each vehicle variant – something which is vastly expensive, both in terms of cost and time. So, employing simulation tools early in development has obvious advantages.

More Realistic Than Ever Before


Our Engine TS (Test System) VVETB (Virtual Vehicle on the Engine Test Bed) eliminates the mechanical influence of the testbed upon the engine. This allows the engine to operate with the most realistic in-vehicle speed and torque behavior at crank-shaft level. The system’s realistic behavior modelling supports the proving of complete vehicle variants and behaviors with a real engine in the loop.

The system lets you replicate start/stop activities with its simulated vehicle flywheel and open clutch. It also allows you to simulate vehicle launch scenarios and driving situations up to maximum engine speed.

Our next level solution comprises a base system for high dynamic testing of compressed ignition (CI) and spark ignition (SI) engines. At its core is a high-dynamic, high-capacity dyno and dedicated dyno control combined with a torsional stiff drive shaft. This can follow the engine’s crank shaft acceleration.

 

A Modular Approach


The modular design of Engine TS VVETB allows you to extend it with measurement devices for a variety of activities, such as investigating fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Automated ECU calibration tools and other devices that can measure and optimize driveability can also be added.

Engine TS VVETB enables you to greatly increase your spectrum of calibration tasks as well as calibration quality. Used with Model.CONNECT™ and AVL Testbed.CONNECT™ the system allows you to add your own simulation models and use other tools. AVL ISAC™ and AVL VSM™, for example, can be used for the simulation of the drivetrain, vehicle, road and driver.

When you add AVL CAMEO™, AVL-DRIVE™, AVL ISAC™ or AVL VSM™, and our testbed automation tool AVL PUMA 2™ the solution offers 24/7 operation. This means that you can calibrate, validate and optimize driveability at an early development stage, helping you to meet your targets and reduce your development effort.

 

Advanced Calibration


The advanced calibration capability that Engine TS VVETB offers enables you to frontload all types of activities, from vehicle to engine testbed environments. Highly accurate simulation of the engine starter, engine flywheel, classic or hybrid drivetrain with transmission and clutch or torque converter is possible. So too are simulation of BSG, ISG and e-axle, powertrain mounts, vehicle mass, road and driver, all of which contribute to increasingly realistic test scenarios.

Realistic transient maneuvers such as engine start, idle, driveaway, acceleration, tip-In and out can be mimicked. This allows the simultaneous optimization of driving performance, emissions, economy and driveability. Indeed, you can assess more than 85 % of driveability-relevant criteria with VVETB – with a correlation to the real vehicle in excess of 95 %.
