  • AVL provides expertise and equipment for test laboratory for lithium-ion batteries at THI campus
  • Both mobile and stationary battery solutions can be tested for durability and under extreme conditions to maximize safety and service life
  • Students are trained as experts in sustainable, safe e-mobility where industry and research come together

Ingolstadt University of Applied Sciences (THI) and global mobility technology company AVL are joining forces in battery development. The partners have opened a modern test laboratory that includes a climatic chamber and test unit for safe e-vehicle- and stationary battery solutions up to 800 volts. The research laboratory allows students to put scientific findings directly into practice. Real customer projects will also be handled.

Ingolstadt, Germany, May 2024: Research and industry are inextricably linked at the campus of Ingolstadt University of Applied Sciences, where students are trained as experts in sustainable, safe e-mobility. AVL provides the new THI test laboratory with expertise and equipment. Both mobile and stationary lithium-ion batteries can be tested for endurance and under extreme conditions at the new research unit, which offers ambient temperatures between minus 40 and plus 90 degrees Celsius. New materials can also be tested. The objective is to maximize the service life, energy efficiency, and reliability of the technology. In future, the data generated during test runs will be processed and analyzed in the cloud semi-automatically. This will help AVL identify anomalies at an early stage, minimize safety risks, and optimize the performance of batteries.

Andreas Braun, Head of Battery Systems, AVL: “AVL enjoys a long-standing partnership with the Ingolstadt University of Applied Sciences. We are delighted to be able to pass on our industry experience to the next generation of engineers to ensure that they are optimally prepared for the challenges of the sector. After all, the demands on innovative and sustainable battery technology are increasing.”

Professor Walter Schober, THI President: “We are excited to be able to test the battery technology of the future with the new testbed and that the findings can be passed on directly to our students via teaching.”

Professor Hans-Georg Schweiger, Head of CARISSMA C-ECOS and the research group for safe electromobility: “The AVL battery testbed will strengthen the long-standing successful collaboration with AVL in research and training. The testbed provides us with numerous opportunities to work together on the latest research topics in the area of e-mobility and beyond.”
